What defines this edit
The idea of a perfume "for women" is more recent than it seems. Until the late nineteenth century, colognes and floral waters were largely shared. It was in the twentieth century that couture perfumery durably linked women with flowers, powder and vanilla, while men were given lavender, herbs and woods. N°5, Shalimar, Miss Dior and Opium fixed those codes, which later decades kept unsettling: Aromatics Elixir and N°19 borrowed dry accords, CK One blurred the lines, and gourmands and musks took over. In our selection, the feminine category is the largest, with more than one hundred and thirty perfumes. Florals, ambers and gourmands dominate, but chypres, leathers and woods are there too. To choose, start from a family that draws you, test on skin rather than on a paper strip, and wait at least an hour: it is the heart and base, not the opening, that will stay with you through the day.
