What does Alien smell like?
Released in 2005 in a violet bottle cut like a talisman, Alien bets everything on an outsized jasmine. Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyère treat it like a beam of light: a blazing sambac supported at first by mandarin and bergamot, then returning in the heart with near-indolic density. Cashmeran brings a velvety, musky-woody texture, while the tiger wood accord adds drier relief. The base of white amber, vanilla and musk radiates a luminous, faintly salty warmth that clings to skin and clothes for hours. No other floral of its time smelled like this: it feels both sun-drenched and otherworldly.

The story of Alien
Thirteen years after Angel created the gourmand family in 1992, Mugler had to prove it could do something other than caramel and patchouli. Alien, launched in 2005, answered with a floral, but one handled like a solid material. Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyère started from a very bright jasmine sambac and paired it with cashmeran, a woody-musky molecule, plus a white amber that gives the whole thing a slightly salty warmth. The violet glass bottle, cut like a stone set on a base, picks up the talisman imagery the house loves. Like Angel, Alien is refillable. Mugler was among the first brands to offer refill fountains in store, long before refills became an eco talking point across the industry. The scent spawned a long family. Alien Essence Absolue deepened the base in 2012, Alien Man opened the line to men in 2018, and Alien Goddess refreshed the idea in 2021 with a sunnier, vanilla-heavy jasmine. The house name shifted from Thierry Mugler to plain Mugler over the years, and the original kept its place throughout.
Our detailed review
Few scents we know start this hard. Jasmine sambac arrives in one block, luminous and slightly metallic, barely lifted by mandarin. After thirty minutes cashmeran wraps it in a woody, almost suede-like texture, and the scent rounds out. The white amber and vanilla base settles in around hour three and then stays put: warm, salty, with an oddly unreal cleanliness. It is a very controlled build, and the jasmine stays legible from start to finish. The flaw comes with the strength. Alien barely moves. What you smell at hour two is what you smell at hour eight. In heat the jasmine can turn shrill, even soapy. It will please people who want a scent with a strong identity, the kind recognised down a corridor. It will not please your office neighbours, or anyone who finds jasmine headache-inducing.
Alien vs its rivals
Valentino’s Donna Born in Roma shares jasmine, cashmeran, vanilla and bergamot with Alien. It is sweeter and softer, with jasmine tea and blackcurrant making it younger and less mineral. Its direct heir, Alien Goddess, keeps the jasmine, vanilla and cashmeran. Coconut water and heliotrope pull it toward a beach at sunset, though: more gourmand, less strange. Mancera’s Instant Crush meets Alien on jasmine, vanilla and musk, with saffron and rose spicing it up. It is even sweeter and just as tenacious. We lean toward the original for its character. Pick Born in Roma for a friendlier jasmine, Goddess for summer, Instant Crush if you like spiced amber.
Longevity, projection and use
Alien is one of the most tenacious scents of its generation. The eau de parfum lasts 10 to 12 hours on skin and several days on fabric. Projection is wide for four or five hours. One spray covers most situations, two at most for an evening outdoors. Apply it to the nape or behind the ear rather than the wrists, so you are not breathing it all day. Keep it for autumn and winter evenings. On public transport or at the office it takes over the room.
