The story of Nina Ricci

Maria Nielli, known as Nina Ricci, born in Turin, opened her couture house in Paris in 1932 with her son Robert Ricci, who ran the business. Her feminine, refined style won a loyal clientele. After the war Robert Ricci developed the perfume side. In 1948 L'Air du Temps, composed by Francis Fabron, expressed the hope of an era emerging from conflict. The bottle topped with one or two doves, designed by Marc Lalique from the early 1950s, became one of the most famous in perfume history. L'Air du Temps established itself as a classic worn by generations of women and gave the house worldwide recognition. Later the brand refreshed its image with Nina, in 2006, and its apple-shaped bottle. Since 1998 Nina Ricci has belonged to the Spanish group Puig, which continues to produce L'Air du Temps alongside newer launches.

An olfactory signature

L'Air du Temps, the house's only entry in our database, embodies a luminous floral softness. Bergamot, peach and neroli open onto a heart of rose, jasmine and violet, before a base of sandalwood, musk and cedar. The effect is tender, lightly powdery and gently spiced, with an airy transparency that made it a scent of youth and grace. Nothing showy, just a classic elegance that is easy to wear and quietly memorable.

Which Nina Ricci perfume to choose?

L'Air du Temps is the only Nina Ricci in our database. Choose it if you love classic, soft, powdery florals with violet and rose in the foreground. It is a light eau de toilette, ideal by day and in spring. It will also suit anyone looking for a retro, elegant and discreet fragrance.

Frequently asked questions

What does Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps smell like?

L'Air du Temps is a soft, luminous floral. Bergamot, peach and neroli give a fresh opening, then rose, jasmine and violet form a tender, powdery bouquet, before a discreet, elegant base of sandalwood, musk and cedar that stays close to the skin for hours.

Who created L'Air du Temps?

L'Air du Temps was composed by perfumer Francis Fabron and launched by Nina Ricci in 1948, driven by Robert Ricci. Its dove-topped bottle, created by Marc Lalique, became one of the most famous in perfumery and a post-war symbol of peace.

Is L'Air du Temps old-fashioned?

It is a post-war classic, and its powdery floral profile recalls another era. But its softness and lightness make it very wearable today, especially for anyone seeking a delicate scent far from current gourmands. It also appeals to collectors of heritage perfumes and iconic bottles.
