Our take

What does Chloé Eau de Parfum smell like?

Chloé Eau de Parfum, launched in 2008, redefined the house’s scent signature around a bright, modern rose, far from opulent rose styles. The opening pairs peony, freesia and juicy lychee in an almost watery freshness. The heart unfolds a clear, powdery rose with lily of the valley and magnolia, giving it a soapy, very clean feel. The base of cedar, amber and musk stays light, white and soft, like freshly ironed linen. It won people over with its clarity and natural elegance: a daytime rose, fresh and unaffected. On skin, the rose stays clean and upright from start to finish.

When to wear it

Perfect for daytime, spring and the office; it suits women who love refined, powdery roses.

The story of Chloé Eau de Parfum

Chloé was no newcomer to perfume in 2008. The house's first fragrance, a tuberose, came out in 1975 during Karl Lagerfeld's time designing its collections. In 2008, though, the brand decided to start over with a scent that simply carried its name, and it treated the launch as a reset of its whole beauty identity. Michel Almairac and Amandine Clerc-Marie took the opposite path to the sugary patchouli that had spread through women's perfume after Coco Mademoiselle. They built it around a pale, clean rose. The bottle mattered as much as the formula. Its fluted glass recalls a pleated dress, and a ribbon tied at the neck became the brand's most recognisable detail. Over the years the line grew with an eau de toilette, L'Eau de Chloé and Roses de Chloé, each lighter than the original. The eau de parfum is still the benchmark that every new version gets measured against.

Our detailed review

Tart, almost fizzy lychee and a freesia that smells of freshly cut stems make for a bright start. Peony adds a watery coolness. Rose moves to the centre quickly, and there's nothing jammy or honeyed about it. This is fine-soap rose, with lily of the valley stressing the clean side and a slightly lemony magnolia. That phase lasts a long while, three or four hours, without changing much. Then cedar and white musk take over, with a very light amber. It smells of clean fabric more than skin. Where it succeeds: a rose anyone can wear at any age, easy at the office. Where it grates: the soapiness feels flat over time, and at moments it's like wearing a luxury shower gel. It needs a counterpoint, a sharper green or woody note, to give it depth. It suits women who like crisp roses and want to smell clean and put together. Fans of dark or patchouli-heavy roses will be bored.

Chloé Eau de Parfum vs its rivals

Issey Miyake's L'Eau d'Issey shares Chloé's freesia, peony and rose trio over the same musk, cedar and amber base. The difference is water. Lotus and melon give the Miyake a mineral, almost marine freshness, while Chloé stays focused on rose. Versace's Bright Crystal leans on peony, magnolia and lotus, with frosted pomegranate and yuzu up top. It's fruitier, sweeter and younger, and it doesn't last as long. Dior's J'adore shares the magnolia and rose over musk and cedar. White flowers, pear and vanilla turn it into a richer and more golden floral. How to pick: Chloé for a clean, crisp rose, L'Eau d'Issey for nineties aquatic freshness. Bright Crystal works if you want an easygoing fruity floral. J'adore is the one for big occasions if you prefer something sunnier.

Longevity, projection and use

Decent longevity for a moderate-strength scent: six to eight hours on most skin, with clear sillage for the first two hours before the musky base settles close. Two or three sprays are enough: base of the neck, wrists, maybe behind the ears. On office days stick to two, because soapy rose fills a closed room fast. On a silk scarf the musk is still there the next day. Spring and summer suit it best, in daytime, for work or lunch. In winter it feels pale but still wears well under a coat, where its cleanliness makes a nice contrast.

VerdictAn impeccable, highly wearable rose, though its soapy side will not charm everyone.

It belongs to the Floral, Powdery family. Chloé Eau de Parfum is one of 1 creations by Chloé in our encyclopedia.
