The story of Donna Born in Roma
Valentino released two perfumes together in 2019: Donna Born in Roma and its masculine twin, Uomo Born in Roma. The pair put into scent the Valentino of Pierpaolo Piccioli, sole creative director since 2016. His Rome is young and nocturnal, less aristocratic than the brand’s historic image. The bottle is the centrepiece. It borrows the pyramid studs of the Rockstud line, the bags and pumps that revived Valentino’s accessories business from 2010 onward. The glass is covered in that raised pattern, so you can spot it on a shelf at a glance. On the formula side, the idea was to build everything around jasmine in two forms, the flower and jasmine tea. The woody vanilla base follows the codes of late-2010s floral ambers. The line has grown a lot since. Donna Born in Roma Intense pushes the vanilla further, and editions such as Coral Fantasy have taken the range in fruitier directions. The studded bottle has stayed the same throughout.
Our detailed review
Tart and a little prickly, the start brings blackcurrant with its budding green-fruit note, fizzy pink pepper and bright bergamot. This phase lasts about twenty minutes. Jasmine then takes the whole stage, sunny and slightly indolic, softened by jasmine tea that adds a green, steeped quality. That is the best and most personal moment. From hour three the vanilla and cashmeran rise. The base turns creamy, woody from the guaiac and a touch smoky. We love the clarity of the jasmine and how the tea lightens it. The weak spot is the drydown. Its woody vanilla looks a lot like other floral ambers of the same period, and the scent loses some personality by late afternoon. It is also sweeter than the opening suggests. It suits jasmine lovers who also enjoy modern vanillas. It will not please anyone who avoids sweet scents or white flowers.

Longevity, projection and use
In its original eau de parfum form, Donna Born in Roma often lasts seven to nine hours on skin. Projection is clear for the first two hours, then the vanilla stays close. Two or three sprays are enough: neck, nape and one wrist. A mist over the hair from a distance works well with the jasmine. Beyond four sprays the sweet base gets insistent in a closed space. Wear it from autumn to spring, for evenings or dates, and by day when the weather is cool. In high summer the jasmine copes with heat but the vanilla weighs everything down.
