Lavender, the aromatic soul of perfumery

Lavender is an aromatic plant whose flowering tops are distilled into a fresh, herbal essential oil. In perfume it smells clean, of laundry and Mediterranean scrubland, with a faintly honeyed softness. It is the backbone of the fougère family and of countless masculine fragrances.

What does Lavender smell like?

Fine lavender is fresh and soft at once: an aromatic, almost camphorous lift, then a floral, fruity, honeyed roundness carried by linalool and linalyl acetate. Lavandin, its hardier cousin, leans towards eucalyptus. Depending on its partners it can feel soapy, herbal or even gourmand. It opens in the top and lingers into the heart, leaving an elegant cleanliness that reads instantly as well groomed.

Origin and production

Lavandula angustifolia, true lavender, grows at altitude in Haute-Provence, where its essential oil carries a protected designation of origin. Lavandin, a more productive hybrid, covers the Valensole plateau, and Bulgaria is also a major producer. The flowering stems are steam-distilled right after the summer harvest. Present in the earliest toilet waters, lavender took centre stage with Houbigant's Fougère Royale in 1882.

How perfumers use it

Lavender sits in the top and heart. With coumarin, oakmoss and bergamot it forms the classic fougère accord; with vanilla, tonka bean and honey it turns amber and warm. Guerlain's Jicky blended it with vanilla as early as 1889, Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Mâle made it gourmand, and Azzaro Pour Homme turned it into an aromatic classic still worn decades later.

How to wear it

Year-round: fresh in spring, comforting in winter when paired with vanilla. It suits lovers of clean classics and fougères.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lavender and lavandin in perfume?

True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, yields a softer, more floral and honeyed oil rich in linalyl acetate. Lavandin, a more productive hybrid, smells more of camphor and eucalyptus. True lavender is pricier and favoured in fine fragrance, while lavandin is widely used in soaps and household products.

Why is lavender so common in men's fragrances?

Because it lies at the heart of the fougère accord, born with Houbigant's Fougère Royale in 1882, which shaped much of masculine perfumery. Its clean, aromatic freshness evokes grooming and the barbershop. Classics such as Azzaro Pour Homme, Drakkar Noir and Cool Water are its direct heirs.

Can lavender be gourmand?

Yes. Paired with vanilla, tonka bean or orange blossom, it loses its soapy edge and becomes soft and enveloping. Guerlain's Jicky was one of the first examples, and Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Mâle popularised this sweet, amber lavender in the 1990s.
