What does Luna Rossa smell like?
Luna Rossa, launched in 2012, takes its name from the competition sailing yacht associated with Prada. Daniela Andrier composed a pared-back fougère rather than the expected marine freshness. Lavender leads from the start, clean and slightly camphorous, brightened by bergamot and orange. The heart combines sage, spearmint and ambroxan into a smooth, almost mineral coolness that recalls polished metal and technical fabric. The base of musky ambrette, patchouli and sandalwood stays soft and clean. There is something geometric about it: no flourishes, just a clear, well-held line. Its restraint is the point, and it wears like a crisp white shirt.

For the office and daytime, especially in warm weather; it suits men who appreciate minimalist elegance.
The story of Luna Rossa
Luna Rossa is first of all a boat. Patrizio Bertelli, Prada's chief executive and Miuccia Prada's husband, set up the Luna Rossa sailing team in the late 1990s, and it has raced for the America's Cup since 2000. When Prada gave the name to a men's fragrance in 2012, the market was dominated by amber woods and by Bleu de Chanel, released two years earlier. Daniela Andrier, also behind Infusion d'Iris and Candy for Prada, went the other way with a lean lavender fougère. She also built it around ambroxan, three years before Dior Sauvage made that molecule the defining sound of mainstream men's fragrance. The line grew fast. Luna Rossa Sport, Carbon, Black and later Ocean each moved further from the original lavender, and several got more attention than the scent that started it all. The 2012 original remains the most restrained of the family and the only one that really plays the aromatic card.

It opens on bathroom lavender, clean and slightly camphorous, with a streak of orange to soften it. Then spearmint and sage take over. That's the best part: a crisp aromatic freshness, somewhere between a cotton shirt straight out of the dryer and mint gum. Ambroxan gives it all a smooth, faintly salty texture. After two hours it closes in on a soft musky ambrette base that sits right on the skin, with patchouli and sandalwood barely there. The upside is the complete absence of sugar, which was rare in a mainstream masculine at the time. The downside is that it lacks body. On some skins the mint tips into toothpaste, and the base is so quiet you wonder whether it's still on. It suits a man in white shirts who wants a faultless office scent. If you like warm masculines with amber or vanilla, you'll find it cold and a bit clinical.
Luna Rossa vs its rivals
Calvin Klein's CK Eternity for Men is its direct ancestor: lavender, sage and sandalwood, with basil and jasmine that make it more floral and more 1980s. Luna Rossa is the stripped-down update, made more mineral by ambroxan. Dior's Sauvage shares lavender, bergamot and ambroxan, but pepper and labdanum make it far louder and drier, the kind of scent you notice from across the street. Sauvage wants impact; Luna Rossa holds back. Acqua di Parma's Colonia is the classic Italian cousin: three citrus notes and lavender over sandalwood and patchouli. It is more citrus-led and shorter-lived, and frankly more elegant. Our pick: Luna Rossa for a discreet office freshness, Sauvage if you want to be noticed at night. Colonia suits summer and pale suits. Eternity will appeal to anyone nostalgic for late-century fougères.
Longevity, projection and use
Four to six hours is a fair expectation for this EDT, with a strong first hour and then a base that hugs the skin. Heat lifts the mint but shortens longevity a little. Three sprays suit the office: both sides of the neck and the chest. For sport or an afternoon outdoors, two are enough. Spray skin rather than fabric, since ambroxan diffuses better from warm skin. This is a spring and summer daytime scent. On a winter evening it feels too light, and something warmer will serve you better.
