Our take

What does Gentleman smell like?

In 2017, Givenchy reinvented Gentleman, one of the house’s historic names, with a resolutely contemporary composition. Nathalie Lorson, Olivier Cresp and Olivier Pescheux made iris the backbone of a soft yet structured woody floral masculine. The opening is juicy with crisp pear, tempered by lavender and cool cardamom. Powdery iris and orange blossom meet at the heart, lending a round, almost cosmetic texture. Patchouli, black vanilla and leather add depth and sensuality, with a faintly smoky warmth. It evokes a sharp suit worn casually, a far cry from the stiffness of older classic masculines.

When to wear it

For the office, evenings and dates, especially in the shoulder seasons. It suits men who like elegant scents with a touch of sweetness.

The story of Gentleman

Givenchy has owned the Gentleman name since 1974. The first was a patchouli-heavy woody masculine. It resembled Hubert de Givenchy himself: tall and discreet, never out of a suit. The 2017 perfume keeps only the title. Written by Nathalie Lorson, Olivier Cresp and Olivier Pescheux, its formula starts from a more current idea: powdery iris and juicy pear over patchouli softened by black vanilla. The year mattered for the house. Riccardo Tisci had just left as artistic director, Clare Waight Keller took over, and Givenchy was rebuilding its fragrance range ahead of L'Interdit the following year. Gentleman then grew into a whole family. A woodier Eau de Parfum followed, then variations such as Réserve Privée and Gentleman Society. The recycled name can confuse buyers, especially on resale sites, so check the year and concentration before you pay.

Our detailed review

Crisp pear and lavender open on a fresh, slightly sweet note, lifted by cardamom without real spice. About half an hour in, the iris appears. It is softer and more cosmetic than in Dior Homme, rounded out by orange blossom. This is our favourite phase, like a clean shirt over lightly powdered skin. Around the third hour patchouli and black vanilla take over with a light leather. The base turns warm, a little smoky and very comfortable. Our reservation is about balance. The sugar from the pear and vanilla gains ground as the day goes on, and by the end it resembles plenty of recent sweet masculines. It also lacks the character of the great iris scents. We recommend it to men who want something elegant and safe that moves easily from the office to dinner. Anyone after a dry, cerebral iris should look to the Dior school instead.

Gentleman vs its rivals

Dior Homme is the most telling rival. Same central iris, same lavender up top, same leather below. Dior Homme adds cocoa and stays drier, while Gentleman leans on pear and black vanilla for a sweeter, rounder feel. If you like slightly austere powder, choose Dior Homme. For a friendlier, more modern take, choose Gentleman. Dior Homme Intense shares the iris, pear and lavender. Ambrette and buttery iris make it denser and more luxurious, and we prefer it for winter evenings. Parfums de Marly's Lippizan overlaps on iris, patchouli, leather and vanilla. Its sage, galbanum and oakmoss push it toward a green, equestrian chypre that feels more classic and stiffer. If you want one versatile bottle, Gentleman is the easiest pick.

Longevity, projection and use

A medium-strength eau de toilette, Gentleman gives five to seven hours on skin. Projection is clear in the first hour, then it sits close to the body. The patchouli and vanilla base holds well on clothing. Three sprays are enough on the neck and chest, with a fourth on your jacket for an evening out. Skip the wrists if you wear a leather watch strap, which absorbs the scent and dulls it. It suits the shoulder seasons and winter, from office days to dinners and dates. In high summer the pear and vanilla get cloying.

VerdictA refined, very likeable modern masculine, though its powdery softness can feel a little tame.

It belongs to the Floral, Woody family. Gentleman is one of 5 creations by Givenchy in our encyclopedia.
