The spirit of a decade

The lockdowns of 2020 changed how people related to perfume: they wore it for themselves, at home, and comforting scents such as musks, vanillas and clean-laundry notes gained ground. Social media, led by TikTok, sped up the spread of trends and propelled perfumes of every price point, from body mists to niche creations. Brands multiplied more intense concentrations, extraits, elixirs and parfums, such as Dior's Sauvage Elixir in 2021. Gourmands reinvented themselves with Mugler's Alien Goddess and Dolce & Gabbana's Devotion, while musky skin scents such as Initio's Musk Therapy extended the second-skin trend. Refillable bottles spread, and houses spoke more openly about biotechnology and the origin of their raw materials, responding to growing customer interest in how perfume is made.

Frequently asked questions

What are the perfume trends of the 2020s?

Intense concentrations such as extraits and elixirs are rising, skin-effect musks are thriving, gourmands remain strong and body mists are popular. Social media accelerates all of these trends. Refillable bottles and transparency about raw materials have also become selling points.

What impact has TikTok had on perfume?

Short videos have made certain perfumes go viral, sometimes years after launch. Affordable mists like Sol de Janeiro sit alongside niche creations in recommendations. The phenomenon mainly affects younger buyers, who discover perfume through community rather than advertising. Word of mouth now travels faster.

Why are there so many elixirs and extraits?

Buyers are looking for more longevity and projection, and social media rewards performance. Brands therefore release their bestsellers in more concentrated versions, often more ambery or spicy. Sauvage Elixir, Libre Intense and Burberry Her Elixir are examples in our selection.
