The 1980s, the era of big sillage

The 1980s were a decade of unapologetic excess: shoulder pads, visible success and perfumes with spectacular projection. Yet the decade closed with the invention of aquatic freshness.

The spirit of a decade

In an economy of ambition and power dressing, perfume became a statement of self. Women's fragrances competed in strength: Giorgio Beverly Hills in 1981, a tuberose floral; Yves Saint Laurent's Paris in 1983, rose and violet; Chanel's Coco in 1984; then Dior's Poison and Calvin Klein's Obsession in 1985. For men, Yves Saint Laurent's Kouros in 1981 and Guy Laroche's Drakkar Noir in 1982 imposed dense, virile fougères. Headspace technology, which captures the scent of a living flower, developed during the decade and widened perfumers' palettes. In 1988, two launches foreshadowed what came next: Davidoff's Cool Water, founder of aquatic freshness, and Calvin Klein's Eternity, a clean, luminous floral, both paving the way for the minimalism of the 1990s. Few decades smelled so loud.

Frequently asked questions

What are the iconic perfumes of the 1980s?

For women: Dior Poison, Calvin Klein Obsession, Giorgio, Yves Saint Laurent Paris and Chanel Coco. For men: Kouros, Drakkar Noir, Dior Fahrenheit and Davidoff Cool Water. Our selection includes around fifteen perfumes launched between 1980 and 1989. Most remain on sale today.

Why were 1980s perfumes so strong?

They reflected an era that prized visible success and self-assertion. Perfumers used high doses of highly diffusive materials: heady flowers, spices, musks and ambery woods. Sillage became a social signature, noticed before the wearer even entered a room, and strength was part of the message.

Are 1980s perfumes still sold?

Many are, often reformulated to meet current regulations. Poison, Kouros, Drakkar Noir, Fahrenheit, Cool Water, Obsession and Coco remain available. Their character has sometimes been softened, but their structure is still recognisable, and several are enjoying renewed interest among younger fans.
