Composed by Marie Salamagne and released in 2015 in the Replica collection, By the Fireplace captures a specific memory: a winter evening beside a crackling hearth. The opening is spiced and fruity, with clove, pink pepper and orange peel. In the heart, roasted chestnut mingles with smoky guaiac wood and cashmeran, like logs slowly burning down. Vanilla, Peru balsam and smoky notes in the base create a resinous sweetness that recalls wood smoke clinging to wool sweaters. The whole is cosy and evocative, more narrative than complex, and highly effective.
