What does Thyme smell like?

Thyme smells of Mediterranean scrub in the sun: a dry, warm, prickly herb with a phenolic facet that recalls throat lozenges. Depending on the chemotype, it can be softer and more floral or rougher and spicier. In higher doses it takes on an almost leathery accent. On skin it fades gradually but leaves a dry, aromatic trace that gives structure to the whole composition.

Origin and production

Thyme oil is steam-distilled from the aerial parts of Thymus vulgaris and related species, grown or wild-harvested in Spain, Morocco and southern France. Red thyme, rich in thymol, is more intense and medicinal; white thyme, rectified by redistillation, is softer. Linalool chemotypes also exist, with a more floral profile. Thyme has been part of aromatic waters for centuries. It is a true Mediterranean classic.

How perfumers use it

Thyme sits in the top, bringing dry, aromatic relief. It pairs with lavender, basil, artemisia, rosemary, leather and woods. Ralph Lauren's Polo sets it beside artemisia and basil in a powerful fougère, Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather uses it with saffron and raspberry, and Jo Malone slips it into the heart of Lime Basil & Mandarin. It lends grit and sunlight to a formula.

How to wear it

Best in spring and summer, thyme suits people who like dry, assertive, Mediterranean aromatic scents.
