Petitgrain: The Bitter Green of the Orange Tree

Petitgrain is an essential oil distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree. It smells green, woody and bitter-citrusy, with a floral touch close to neroli, and it is one of the pillars of eau de Cologne.

What does Petitgrain smell like?

Petitgrain smells like a crushed orange leaf: a bitter green, slightly woody, with a floral facet that recalls neroli without its sweetness. There is also a dry citrus note and an almost herbal touch. More tenacious than most citrus notes, it holds well in the top and carries freshness into the heart of a composition, with a slightly austere elegance.

Origin and production

Petitgrain comes from the bitter orange, Citrus aurantium, the same tree that gives neroli from its flowers and bitter orange oil from its peel. Leaves and twigs are steam-distilled. Petitgrain bigarade comes from the Mediterranean basin, while Paraguay produces a widely used petitgrain. The name recalls that the tree's small green fruits were once distilled. Lemon and mandarin petitgrains also exist.

How perfumers use it

Petitgrain sits in the top, providing a green, lasting freshness. It pairs with neroli, bergamot, lavender, rosemary and musks. Mugler Cologne combines it with neroli and orange blossom, Le Labo's Bergamote 22 blends it with bergamot and grapefruit, and Amouage's Reflection Man uses it with rosemary to open a woody floral. It gives colognes their crisp, leafy backbone. A touch of austerity, well placed.

How to wear it

Best in spring and summer, petitgrain suits people who like elegant, fresh, slightly bitter colognes.

Frequently asked questions

What does petitgrain smell like?

Petitgrain smells like a crushed orange leaf: bitter green, slightly woody, with a floral touch close to neroli. It is fresh, clean and a little austere. More tenacious than other citrus notes, it extends a perfume's freshness beyond the first few minutes.

What is the difference between petitgrain, neroli and orange blossom?

All come from the bitter orange tree. Petitgrain is distilled from leaves and twigs and smells green and woody. Neroli is distilled from the flowers and is fresh and floral. Orange blossom absolute, solvent-extracted, is headier and honeyed. Perfumers often combine all three.

Which perfumes contain petitgrain?

It appears in the top of Mugler Cologne, Le Labo's Bergamote 22, Amouage's Reflection Man and Abercrombie & Fitch's Fierce. Louis Vuitton's Afternoon Swim uses it in the heart to extend its citrus freshness. It is also a staple of many classic eaux de Cologne.
