Ginger, perfumery's fizzy spice

Ginger is a rhizome distilled into an oil that is both spicy and lemony. In perfume it smells like freshly grated root: sharp, peppery, slightly earthy, with an almost sparkling lift. It is a fresh spice, ideal for energising an opening.

What does Ginger smell like?

Fresh ginger smells bright and zesty, close to lemongrass, with a prickly bite that wakes you up. Underneath come woody, earthy and lightly peppery facets. Depending on the extract, it can lean towards ginger ale or towards a drier warmth. On skin its liveliness rules the first minutes, then it melts into a gentle heat that accompanies woods and amber.

Origin and production

Zingiber officinale is grown in tropical Asia, notably India and China, and in West Africa, especially Nigeria. The dried rhizome is steam-distilled into a warm, woody oil, while fresh rhizome is CO2-extracted for a zestier, truer version. Fresh-root extracts are prized for their lemony sparkle. A long-standing spice of Asian medicine and cooking, ginger became a perfumery staple with the rise of fresh, spicy masculine fragrances.

How perfumers use it

Ginger mostly sits in the top, occasionally in the heart. It pairs with citrus, grapefruit, pepper, cardamom, cedar and incense, and it cuts through sweeter bases. Bleu de Chanel places it in the heart to drive a woody aromatic, Hermès's Twilly d'Hermès makes it fizz against tuberose, and Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille uses it to brighten a base of tobacco and vanilla.

How to wear it

Year-round, with a preference for spring and autumn. It suits anyone who likes lively scents that are spicy without weight.

Frequently asked questions

What does ginger smell like in a perfume?

Like the fresh root: a zesty, peppery opening close to lemon, followed by woody and slightly earthy nuances. Unlike warm spices such as cinnamon, it gives a sense of freshness and energy. It sometimes recalls ginger ale or spiced tea.

Is ginger a masculine or feminine note?

Both. In our database it opens masculines such as Yves Saint Laurent's Y, Azzaro's Wanted and Paco Rabanne's Pure XS, but also Twilly d'Hermès, a feminine that pairs it with tuberose. Wherever it appears, its job is to energise the composition.

Which notes pair well with ginger?

It shines with citrus, especially grapefruit and bergamot, and with other spices such as cardamom and pepper. It also brightens woods like cedar and vetiver, and contrasts beautifully with soft notes such as vanilla, tobacco or white flowers, keeping them from feeling heavy.
