Gardenia: A White Flower Perfumers Rebuild

Gardenia is a white flower with a creamy, green and faintly mushroomy scent, close to jasmine and tuberose. In perfumery it is almost always recreated as an accord, because the blossom yields practically no usable extract.

What does Gardenia smell like?

Gardenia smells like a thick, milky white flower with a green, almost leafy opening and a hint of fresh mushroom that sets it apart from jasmine. There are also facets of coconut, peach and a touch of spice. On skin the accord blooms in the heart, growing creamier, sunnier and headier before melting into musks and pale woods. It is lush without being indolic.

Origin and production

Gardenia jasminoides is a shrub native to East Asia, cherished in China and Japan and now grown in many warm regions. Its delicate flowers do not distil well, and extraction remains marginal and very expensive. Perfumers therefore rebuild gardenia using materials such as styrallyl acetate for the green facet, jasmine, tuberose, creamy lactones and methyl anthranilate, each house arriving at its own interpretation.

How perfumers use it

Gardenia sits in the heart, adding breadth and milky roundness to white bouquets. It pairs with jasmine, tuberose, orange blossom, fruity notes and musks. Coach by Coach uses it to soften a fruity bouquet, Paco Rabanne's Lady Million blends it with honey, and Jour d'Hermès weaves it into a luminous floral built around white flowers. Gardenia gives these compositions a plush, petal-thick texture.

How to wear it

Best in spring and summer, gardenia appeals to lovers of generous, sunny, feminine white florals.

Frequently asked questions

What does gardenia smell like in perfume?

Gardenia smells like a creamy, green white flower somewhere between jasmine and tuberose, with nuances of fresh mushroom, coconut and peach. It is both milky and sunny. In perfume this scent is recreated through an accord that aims to capture the feel of a freshly picked bloom.

Is gardenia in perfume natural?

Almost never. The flower yields very little fragrant material, and extraction is rare and costly. Perfumers therefore reconstruct the smell from other materials: jasmine, tuberose, styrallyl acetate, lactones and musks. Like lily of the valley, it is an accord, and every house has its own version.

Which famous perfumes contain gardenia?

Gardenia appears in the top of Miss Dior, launched in 1947, and in the heart of Paco Rabanne's Lady Million, Jean Paul Gaultier's Scandal, Marc Jacobs' Daisy and Jour d'Hermès. Giorgio by Giorgio Beverly Hills also makes it part of its opulent white-flower bouquet.
