Our take

What does Ombre Nomade smell like?

Composed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud and launched in 2018, Ombre Nomade sits in the Louis Vuitton fragrance collection as a tribute to deserts and long journeys. The opening pairs a dark, almost winey raspberry with a spicy rose in a fruity, floral register. The heart brings smoky, deep oud, softened by dry incense that evokes sacred smoke. Benzoin, amber and woody notes add a resinous, balsamic warmth with a slightly vanillic sweetness. It evokes a desert tent, antique rugs, a wood fire under the night sky. An opulent, refined oud designed to announce its presence.

When to wear it

For autumn and winter evenings and grand occasions, sparingly. It suits lovers of oud and luxurious orientals.

The story of Ombre Nomade

Louis Vuitton sold perfumes between the wars, including Heures d’Absence, before dropping the category for decades. The comeback began in 2012, when the house hired Jacques Cavallier Belletrud as master perfumer. Born in Grasse into a family of perfumers, he had previously composed L’Eau d’Issey for Issey Miyake. Vuitton gave him a workshop in Grasse, Les Fontaines Parfumées, and a first women’s collection came out in 2016. The bottles, all identical and deliberately plain, are designed by Marc Newson. In 2018 the house released a men’s collection and then Ombre Nomade, an oud intended as unisex. That choice was strategic. Oud was then the prestige material, especially for Middle Eastern clients, and every major house wanted one. Cavallier Belletrud frames it with raspberry and rose up top, dry incense, then a benzoin and amber base. The name evokes nomadic desert life, an image the campaign carried further. It remains the darkest scent in the whole collection.

Our detailed review

Raspberry leads with a jammy, almost winey quality that the rose darkens. That fruity start is seductive. It lasts half an hour before oud takes the whole stage: smoky, a bit medicinal, with an animal edge that suggests warm leather. Incense lightens it, like cold church smoke. After three hours benzoin and amber round everything off with a resinous sweetness that lasts into the night. You can smell the quality of the materials, especially in an oud that stays clean and never turns barnyard. Our reservations: it goes linear after hour three, and its density can feel suffocating in a heated room. The smoke also ends up saturating the wearer’s own nose. It suits oud lovers who want a readable, refined take rather than a raw exercise. If you dislike smoke or heavy scents, it will flatten you.

Ombre Nomade vs its rivals

Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather has the same raspberry opening, the same incense and a woody amber base. Where Ombre Nomade heads for oud, Tuscan Leather heads for leather and suede, rawer and drier. Amouage’s Interlude Man shares oud, incense and amber, but oregano and pepper give it a bitter herbal chaos, with no raspberry to soften things. It is the toughest of the three. Parfums de Marly’s Hamdani meets Ombre Nomade on incense and benzoin and swaps the fruit for honey, clove and tobacco. It is warmer and less smoky. Our advice: Ombre Nomade for a luxurious oud that is easy to read, Tuscan Leather if you prefer leather, Interlude Man for fans of extreme resins.

Longevity, projection and use

Ombre Nomade is very powerful. Expect 12 hours or more on skin and several days on a coat. Projection is dense for the first five hours. One spray handles most evenings, two in a large space or outdoors in cold weather. Spray it on the chest under your shirt so body heat releases the incense slowly. It is built for autumn and winter nights and big occasions. Even a tiny dose dominates an office. In summer we skip it.

VerdictA sumptuous, well-balanced oud whose power calls for restraint.

It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Ombre Nomade is one of 2 creations by Louis Vuitton in our encyclopedia.
