What does Orchid smell like?
The orchid accord smells of a creamy white flower, with vanilla softness, a powdery touch and sometimes a spicy or fruity nuance. Depending on the interpretation it can be bright and milky, or dark and almost carnal. On skin it melts into the heart of a perfume as a floral velvet that rounds out the composition and links it to gourmand bases. It is less a precise smell than an impression of floral sophistication.
Origin and production
The orchid family counts tens of thousands of species, yet very few are fragrant and none is grown for a mainstream perfume extract. The notable exception is vanilla, the fruit of an orchid, Vanilla planifolia. The orchid note is therefore a fantasy accord built with musks, vanilla-like notes, white-flower facets and spices. It became popular in the 2000s alongside the rise of floral orientals.
How perfumers use it
Orchid sits in the heart, where it softens and enriches other florals. It pairs with jasmine, rose, patchouli, vanilla and dark fruit. Tom Ford Black Orchid makes it the heroine of an opulent composition with truffle and patchouli; Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb pairs it with jasmine and rose; Yves Saint Laurent Libre uses it in the heart alongside orange blossom.
