Our take

What does Explorer smell like?

Launched in 2019, Explorer marked a new chapter for Montblanc, built around travel and traceable ingredients. The opening is dry and fizzy: bergamot, pink pepper and aromatic clary sage. The heart spotlights Haitian vetiver and Indonesian patchouli, earthy and woody, underlined by a touch of leather. The base combines cocoa, ambroxan and akigalawood, a spicy, peppery wood, for a mineral, long-lasting amber trail. Its kinship with the popular woody ambers of the time is clear, but Explorer adds an earthier tone that feels both modern and relaxed. On skin, the cocoa keeps the vetiver from turning austere.

When to wear it

Versatile for the office, travel and weekends. It appeals to men after a fresh woody scent that is easy to wear.

The story of Explorer

Montblanc fragrances have been developed under licence by Interparfums since 2010. Legend, in 2011, gave the brand a foothold in men's perfume with an easygoing fougère. Explorer, in 2019, shifted tone. The pen and leather-goods house leaned on a travel theme and put ingredient origins up front: Haitian vetiver, Indonesian patchouli. Three perfumers signed it, Jordi Fernández, Olivier Pescheux and Antoine Maisondieu. Maisondieu had composed Armani Code fifteen years earlier. The base uses Akigalawood, a Givaudan captive derived from patchouli, with peppery and woody facets. On release, Explorer was instantly set against Creed Aventus. It borrows the idea of a dry, fresh wood over an ambery base. That comparison did a lot for its fame, but the scent follows its own, earthier logic. It gave Montblanc a second pillar next to Legend rather than another flanker of it. The brand then stretched the line, notably with the more aquatic Explorer Ultra Blue and with Explorer Platinum.

Our detailed review

Bergamot and pink pepper make for a clean, dry, slightly prickly start. Clary sage adds a smell of hay and freshly scrubbed skin. Vetiver arrives quickly. It's less earthy than you'd expect, more smoky and faintly leathery. This first hour is Explorer's best. After that, ambroxan takes up a lot of room, and here we have a reservation. That mineral, slightly salty base has become ubiquitous in men's perfume, and it makes Explorer smell familiar. Cocoa rescues it at moments, showing up around hour four as a sweet shadow. On a hot day, though, the ambroxan takes on an almost metallic edge. Overall it stays clean and versatile, never a nuisance to the people around you. It suits the man who wants a weekday scent that works at the office and on Saturdays without any morning deliberation. It will bore anyone who already owns a handful of woody ambers. Vetiver purists will find it far too smoothed over.

Explorer vs its rivals

Dior Homme shares a surprising amount with Explorer on paper: bergamot and sage, cocoa and vetiver, even leather. On skin they have little in common. Dior Homme's powdery iris reads as lipstick and tailoring, while Explorer stays woody and sporty. Choose Dior Homme for polished, slightly retro elegance and Explorer for a no-fuss daily wear. Le Labo Santal 33 overlaps on ambroxan, cedar and leather. It is drier and heavier on cardamom, with a papery signature people recognise instantly. That is either the point or the problem, depending on how much you want to blend in. Parfums de Marly Haltane shares only clary sage and bergamot. Its saffron and praline over oud make it far more gourmand and evening-leaning. Of the four, Explorer is the simplest and the easiest to wear every day.

Longevity, projection and use

Explorer lasts six to eight hours, and its ambery base lingers on clothes. Projection is clear for the first hour, then moderate, noticeable at around a metre. Three sprays cover a normal day, four if you're outdoors. Apply to the neck and upper chest. Its dry, barely sweet base makes it wearable from spring through autumn, including summer days that are warm rather than scorching. It's an office, travel and weekend scent. For evenings it lacks a bit of warmth.

VerdictA very well-made everyday woody aromatic that stays close to the codes of its category.

It belongs to the Woody, Aromatic family. Explorer is one of 1 creations by Montblanc in our encyclopedia.
